Christmas: the family tradition

Christmas is approaching, bringing with it a flood of sweet memories to my heart—memories I never thought I would not be a part of. In 2020, I reconnected with my five siblings (four brothers and my sister). We discussed our annual Christmas family lunch, a tradition we faithfully observe on the 25th of each year. That particular year was uniquely special, distinct from others, as a significant plan began to take shape on the horizon. I’ll come back to that in a moment, but first, let me share more about this blessed gathering and what it meant to our family.

Echoes of Laughter, joy and happiness

Being the youngest among my siblings, I was always a bit spoiled, a fact I cherish and love about our dynamics. Each one holds a special place in my heart, and they all know it. Thinking of them fills me with warmth, encompassing a mix of the good and let’s admit it, the crazy ones 😊.

Our Christmas lunches are a testament to the bond we share—filled with laughter, joy, and the unique chaos that family gatherings bring. Siblings, nephews, nieces—all gathered around the table, soaking in the happiness of the moment. Like many families, we consciously set aside our differences during these feasts. It’s a wonderful dance of togetherness that puts a big smile on my mother’s face, having her family around the table year after year.

Navigating the unexpected

Going back to 2002, we had no clue that our Christmas gatherings wouldn’t be the same after it. He was the man of the house, sharp, and his words needed no repetition. His mere look after speaking was enough, and none dared to argue.

My-Dad-my-Hero

My Dad did his best to raise his six kids during the challenging days in Lebanon with high uncertainty. That day, we gathered and became kids again! You should see my nephews and nieces, looking and laughing at us, probably thinking, “We don’t recognize our parents😊.” We went wild, throwing jokes, reliving memories from our childhood, and acting like the carefree bunch we used to be. That time of year is for letting go, and returning to our family house as we used to be, kids.

After a couple of months, my Dad wasn’t feeling well. His balance was off, and he could barely walk straight. We took him to his doctor for a routine check-up. The doctor seemed worried and ordered a PET-SCAN. When we asked about the need for it, he mentioned the possibility of cancer. I was stunned. “Cancer?” The doctor confirmed that it might be a cause for my Dad’s weakness, but it was not a certainty. I took him with my brother for the test in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon.

A week later, we received the test report, and here it was, the undeniable shocking result. My heart melted in my chest; my Dad had lung cancer, and it was advanced. I was devastated, especially since my marriage was coming soon. Unfortunately, my Hero lost his battle a few months later. But as my resilience taught me, life goes on and I must keep walking for my own family now.

Echo of Dad’s wisdom: Love in Every Moment

I must admit that I had a wonderful time with my family, and nothing can replace that. Those precious moments fueled me with unconditional love for my little family, my wife, and my two wonderful sons. This gave me the wisdom to be grateful for the time I am having with them. Living these moments together and building the bonds for a strong family that sticks together to face whatever life can throw at them. That was what my Dad taught me.

A Season of Reflection

As we approach another Christmas season, I reflect on the lessons learned, the bonds strengthened, and the love that transcends distance. Cherished moments with family, whether near or far, remain etched in the heart. Let this season be a reminder to appreciate the present, forgive past grievances, and embrace the love that defines a family.

In every gathering, whether in person or distance, there’s a magic that binds families together. From my heart to yours, Merry Christmas y’all! May your reunions be filled with joy, laughter, and the warmth of family love.
